Basic Dosing Guidelines

Category: Medical Marijuana in Mississippi

The unique manner in which medical marijuana is dosed sets it apart from other drugs. Since the therapeutic dosage for medicinal marijuana varies greatly from person to person, there are no precise dosing guidelines. Depending on the mode of intake, each person can potentially require a different dosage. For an edible, 5 mg could be an effective amount, but for an oil, the same person might require more or less. The typical daily dosage of THC is between 30-100 mg per day, with a single dose often ranging between 5 and 10 mg.

Although the complex nature of medical marijuana dosing may seem intimidating, we have the resources to assist you in getting started. Remember that finding your ideal dosage could take some time. In order to discover their perfect fit, we advise our patients to experiment with numerous doses and product categories.

Start Low – Go Slow

One advantage of medicinal marijuana is the freedom to customize your dose based on your requirements. The best course of action if you’re new to medicinal marijuana is to start with the lowest amount recommended and gradually increase it. We advise weekly dosage increases till you get your desired therapeutic result. By doing this, you’ll be able to maximize each dose before developing a tolerance.

According to some research, larger dosages of THC alone may not be as effective in relieving pain as higher doses of THC coupled with higher doses of CBD. This is partly attributable to the Entourage Effect, which boosts the healing effects of cannabinoids in the body (see below). Lower amounts of CBD and THC together can lessen the negative effects of medicinal marijuana.

Lower THC doses may be more beneficial and well-tolerated by the patient:  More is less: For example, cancer patients who received 21 mg/day of Sativex (a cannabis sublingual spray with roughly equal amounts of CBD and THC) reported significant pain reductions, more so than cancer patients who received 52 mg of Sativex, while those who received 83 mg of Sativex did no better than a placebo. THC dosages that total more than 20 to 30 mg per day, or a single consumption of 10 mg or more, may result in undesirable side effects.[8]

Recognize various product categories

There are several ways to take medical marijuana, which means there are numerous ways your body will react to it. When transferring from one product to another, don’t assume you’ll need the same dosage. Medical marijuana can be consumed via tinctures, edibles, topicals, vapes, and smoking forms. When experimenting with new products, start with a lower dose than you are accustomed to until you find your ideal product-dose pair(s).

For instance, a patient who vapes 50 mg of THC daily may be getting the recommended monthly dosage of ONE OUNCE of cannabis. Although this may differ from person to person, it may be assumed that vaping provides patients with more THC per milligram than smoking because 50 mg of vape multiplied by 30 days equals 1500 mg of THC vaped.

“The Entourage Effect” can be felt.

We advise purchasing products with both THC, the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana, and CBD, the non-intoxicating ingredient, for the best therapeutic results. The medicinal benefits of both CBD and THC can be enhanced when used together, improving your quality of life.

Depending on the person and their medical condition, an average daily dose of active cannabinoids, including both THC and CBD, can range from 30-100 mg. However, for patients new to cannabis, 10-15 mg of both THC and CBD combined is an excellent beginning dose for new medical marijuana consumers.
